Despite hopes that Kasadwini Atenaeɛ would avoid being impacted by the COVID-19 storm, Untold International is announcing that as of Monday, March 16, 2020, the literacy center in Asisiriwa will close for four weeks.
President Akufo-Addo announces nationwide school closures
The decision comes after President Nana Akufo-Addo announced late Sunday evening that Ghanaian schools and universities will be closing indefinitely. President Akufo-Addo took preemptive measures after four more cases of coronavirus were confirmed, bringing the country’s total to six.
Ghana enacts strict limitations in effort to stop spread of COVID-19
Ghana has also enacted a travel ban barring entry to visitors from nations with 200 or more confirmed coronavirus cases in an attempt to prevent the spread of the disease.
Funerals, religious gatherings, conferences, and other public gatherings have also been banned for the next four weeks. However, Akufo-Addo has made an exception for funerals with fewer than 25 people in attendance.
No cases recorded in Asisiriwa
While Asisiriwa has not had any confirmed cases of COVID-19, nor have any of the neighboring villages or towns, one case was confirmed in the Ashanti Region. For this reason, Untold International decided to heed President Akufo-Addo’s decree and close the literacy center for four weeks.
While Kasadwini Atenaeɛ does require visitors to wash their hands before handling books as a standard practice, there is still concern about social distancing.
During the closure, head librarian Iveson Kumi Kwadwo and head teacher Mary Akayini will be paid, and they will use the time to clean, catalog, and organize the books in the library, as well as other administrative tasks.
